What WordPress is and what a custom site is
WordPress is a content management system. A site is made up of a theme, which sets the look, and plugins, which add features. Content is stored in a database and the page is assembled every time someone opens it. That makes WordPress flexible, but also heavier.
A custom site is built for one specific business. We build it as static HTML by default: the page is already finished on the server and opens instantly. If content needs to change, we add a simple admin panel just for the things you need to edit.
When WordPress is the right fit
- You have a lot of content, such as a blog or news, that several people add regularly.
- You need to add features quickly and a ready-made plugin already exists for them.
- Someone on your team already knows WordPress.
- Someone looks after updates, backups and security on an ongoing basis.
In those cases WordPress is a sensible choice, and we will tell you so honestly. Using a ready-made solution is often cheaper than building the same thing again.
When a custom site is the better fit
- Your content rarely changes: prices, opening hours, a few photos at the start of the season.
- You want the site to open quickly on a phone, even on a weak signal.
- You don't want to deal with plugin and theme updates every month.
- The site needs something that won't fit into an off-the-shelf plugin, such as booking built around the way you work.
- You want a design that doesn't look like a template.
Example: Little Bridge Foundation
Little Bridge Foundation is an Estonian non-profit that helps communities in Uganda become self-sufficient. Their old WordPress site was hard to manage and donating meant clicking through several tabs. The new site had to be bilingual, lead straight to a donation and let the organisation manage its own news, gallery and newsletters.
We built a bilingual custom site with a donation flow, a recurring donation page, newsletter management and an admin panel where the team can change content, colours, the hero image, news and the gallery. The site went live in August 2026 and replaced WordPress. Updates go out with no downtime, and every change is checked in a real browser in both languages.
The same approach worked for Sillametsa Talu: the old WordPress site was slow, the owner now manages the new site's content himself, and there are no more plugins to update.
And if WordPress has to stay
Sometimes hosting already runs on WordPress and can't or shouldn't be changed. CutCtrl was exactly that case: the studio's site had to stay on WordPress.com hosting. We built the site as a plugin that serves a fast static site from inside WordPress. The client got a new site without switching hosts.
Price and running costs
The upfront price isn't the only cost. A WordPress site needs regular updates and often paid plugins. A custom static site needs less maintenance, but every new feature has to be built. At Brändilabor a custom brochure site starts from €290 and maintenance costs €39 a month, whether we built the site or it runs on WordPress.
In short
If you have lots of content that changes every day, consider WordPress. If you want a fast site that is easy to look after and you only need to change a few things, a custom site is the better fit. If you're not sure, talk to us: we'll tell you which makes more sense in your situation, even if the answer is WordPress.
